The Navigator is the luxury SUV which started the craze but it was unfortunately left behind by its competitors as it aged quite a bit since it was launched more than half a decade ago. In order to be able to get to the top of its class once again and regain all the customers Lincoln lost, a new model has been released a few weeks ago as a concept car with the 2017 Lincoln Navigator. While there aren’t that many details available about it, Lincoln did showcase a few important aspects of the upcoming car and from the looks of it, the new Navigator is going to be a really interesting competitor.
2017 Lincoln Navigator Exterior
Just like before, the new model will still ride on a body on frame structure, so there will be a boxed frame as well as an aluminum body. Thanks to the extensive use of aluminum, the Navigator will very likely shed up to 1,000 pounds, more than enough to make it a more than capable on road machine. While it will be a body on frame crossover, it seems that Lincoln will be aiming it at on-road use only, so the off-road capabilities are likely going to be gone. This is both good and bad as it will allow them to make a better than average crossover on the road but the lack of off-road capabilities might make them lose quite a few sales.
The concept car looks to be just a concept at a first glance but on a second look, it seems that the model is quite close to production. We say this because it features a lot of the design found on the Continental concept, a car which was showcased in production form nearly identical. We are however pretty sure that the gull wing doors found on the 2017 Lincoln Navigator are not going to be made available on the production vehicle because it would become too expensive and the doors would be just too heavy to make sense. Also, the three electric steps that allow people to get in an out of the car easier will not be made available but we do expect some sort of fixed steps because the body on frame design makes for quite a high floor which would become troublesome if used by certain people.
Its front end design as well as the large LED strip on the back of the car will be made available on the production model as well while the rather interesting wheels and the blacked out C and D pillars should see production as well. This is not all that great for Lincoln though and it will certainly attract a lot of attention from critiques because the car is very similar to the Range Rover Sport, a former Ford-Group car.
Interior of new 2017 Lincoln Navigator
We really do hope that the car’s interesting interior layout will be offered on the production model as well because it really allow the Navigator to depart itself from its competitors. There are four massively comfortable individual seats on the first and second rows while the third row uses a bench-like seat which is still offering a lot of lateral support. The only drawback of this design are the electrically operated middle seats which are quite slow to respond so the access towards the rear might be a bit too slow.
2017 Navigator Lincoln Engine and Transmission
Like its close siblings such as the upcoming Expedition or the new F-150, the 2017 Lincoln Navigator will be using a Ford-developed 3.5 liter EcoBoost V6 petrol engine. This will be tuned specifically for this application so it will make a lot more than its siblings. Lincoln only said that the Navigator will be able to provide more than 400 horsepower and 400 lb-ft of torque but if we had to guess, we really think that the new model will be making as much as 550 horsepower and in excess of 600 lb-ft of torque, all possible thanks to a vastly redesigned engine which was first showcased on the new Raptor. The only transmission of choice for the new Navigator will be a Ford-developed 10 speed automatic which will also be used on the Raptor. This will send the power to all four wheels as standard via electronically controlled differentials so the car should be perfect for all-weather use.
Price and release date of 2017 Navigator
There are no official statements about accurate date of Navigator’s release, but according to rumors, it should be available for purchase in second half of 2016. Price is going to vary depending on trim level and equipment, so for the basic model you will have to single out $67.000. Price will be increasing with every model so to attain the highest trim level you will need to pay $74.000.
