The all new Mustang has been out for more than a year now but so far only one of its high performance versions was released with the GT350. However, it seems that the 2017 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 is a lot closer than we thought especially since a model has been spied testing with heavy camouflage on it. This new high performance version is expected to be Ford’s first car to use a new experimental engine, just like the GT350 did with the flat-plane crankshaft V8. However, this time around the engine will be a very different beast but it will still be based on the regular type of V8.
Design and Performance of 2017 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500
The model that was spied a while ago was using a wider track that the regular Mustang and it also featured much wider tires, both in the front and at the back. This is doesn’t mean an all wheel drive system but it means that Ford is focusing not only on straight line performance but also on cornering speed. The car will likely feature electronic sway bars, adjustable dampers and stiffer springs than the usual car while the brakes will definitely be provided by Brembo and will most likely be ceramic. The carbon fiber wheels might also be used on the 2017 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 in order to help it put all that power to the ground but this hasn’t been confirmed just yet.
A few weeks ago a close individual to Ford said that the new Shelby GT500 is able to run a quarter of a mile in less than 11 seconds and at a top speed of 126 MPH which is actually faster than the Hellcat which does the quarter mile with street tires in 11,2 at 125 MPH. If Ford is using street tires, the GT500 will not only be the most powerful muscle car out there but one of the most desired cars on the US market.
2017 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 Engine and Transmission
It still is a mystery what type of engine the 2017 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 will be rocking but it seems that the most probable candidate will be a 5 liter V8 with direct injection and twin turbochargers. The block will be derived from the regular Coyote but it will use four valve heads, a reworked fuel system and two low pressure turbochargers. Ford expects this engine to make more than 740 horsepower and 700 lb-ft of torque, enough to beat the Hellcat at its own game and thanks to the direct injection system and turbochargers, the car will offer a lot more torque from lower RPM and it should be much faster when using drag radials than its closest competitor. The transmission that will handle all that power will likely be a new 6 speed automatic instead of the usual 10 speed unit in order to make it faster and easier to handle than its closest competitor.
Price and Release date of GT500 Mustang Shelby
The release date of this new Shelby Mustang is still unknown at this point but considering that the spied model was looking complete, at least on the exterior, we expect it on the market by the start of 2018, just in time to compete with the new Chrysler offerings. The price will very likely get close to $70,000 which is a lot of money for a Mustang but it should be well worth it considering all the engineering Ford is putting in its new high performance cars.
