The second generation of the Cruze has been announced ever since 2013 but the car’s release has been delayed by a fully year due to the fact that they had to make some engineering changes to the car’s platform and running gear in order to make it suited for both the Chinese and US markets. Back in 2015 they released the Chinese version of the car which many people thought that it will come to the US market unchanged but GM took everyone by surprise when a few months ago they released the new 2017 Chevrolet Cruze, a more appealing car than the Chinese version with a similar engine but with a more upscale feel to it.

Besides the new design the car features an entirely new interior as well as a unique engine for the US market. Not too long ago GM also announced the 2017 Cruze Chevrolet which doesn’t really bring anything new for the sedan but it brings an entirely new hatchback design for the US market. Just like with the sedan, the hatchback is using the same modular D2XX platform and it now has a lot more in common with the newest Opel Astra. The price of the two cars is nearly identical starting at roughly $17,000 but the top end models go in the favor of the sedan which is usually $500 to $1,000 cheaper than its equivalent hatchback.

Engine and Transmission of 2017 Cruze

Probably the biggest problem of the 2017 Chevrolet Cruze is the fact that there is only a single engine choice which is a bit narrow for today’s standards. The engine is quite a potent unit, being a 1.4 liter turbocharged mill offering up to 153 horsepower and 177 lb-ft of torque on a really wide rpm range which also helps tremendously with fuel consumption. A 6 speed manual is available on the most models. The only exception being the top end Premier which is a shame because it is a really nice unit to start with. The 6 speed automatic is not that bad either and it is quite smooth as well but it is heavier than the manual and it shows, especially under heavy acceleration.

In order to make it more interesting, both the sedan and hatchback versions of the car are available with an RS package which adds quite a few styling upgrades to the car. This makes it look and feel a lot more premium than it really is and it is not that expensive as well. The only grief here is that despite it makes the car look great with new front and rear bumpers, a more aggressive grille with red surroundings and all black inserts, the package only changes that, so the tiny engine remains the same. We do hope that in the near future Chevrolet will borrow from the Astra their 1.6 liter turbocharged mill which is easily capable of more than 200 horsepower.

The 2017 Chevrolet Cruze also brings a few upgrades inside the cabin meaning that all the models, even the one at $17,000, come as standard with a 6 or 7 inch LCD screen which supports both Apple Car Play and Google’s Android Auto. This makes the car really good value for money as it basically provides the driver, if they have a compatible phone, with navigation, internet music and internet access for free. On top of that, the RS package will add sportier seats with more supportive side bolsters. Cruze is going to be equipped with a unique interior package which will replace all the usual cloth with leather door covers and seats. The car will also feature a leather wrapped steering wheel and some aluminum accents on the center stack, a really nice touch for its price.
