There has been a massive change on the medium sized truck market in the United States where the medium sized trucks are now slightly larger than their bigger brothers. This might be a bit odd but most manufacturers chose to do it in order to offer their customers a more complete experience and this was only possible by offering larger trucks. The 2017 Chevrolet Colorado is the perfect example of that as it is slightly longer than the Silverado and it also offers a slightly roomier cabin than its sibling. This doesn’t mean it is more expensive though or that it is harder to drive.

Thanks to a lot of engineering work done by General Motors, the Colorado is one of the best driving trucks out there offering the perfect balance between off-road capabilities and on-road smoothness. In order to evolve and become a better truck, a new model is set to be released in the near future with the 2017 Chevrolet Colorado, the first mid-life update of the US model since it was launched back in 2014 which is likely going to include slight updates on the exterior, probably the same engines and a new interior to make it a more upmarket model able to compete with the Volkswagen Amarok. Just as you would expect from a better equipped truck, the base price might change for the end user and go past $22,000. However, GM is very likely going to still offer fleet models for under $20,000, so they will have a model for pretty much everyone.

The 2.5 liter naturally aspirated inline 4 petrol engine of the current model is very likely going to be carried over on the new 2017 Chevrolet Colorado unchanged as it is one of the most reliable and also one of the more powerful units out there. The 200 horsepower and 191 lb-ft of torque will remain unchanged but the fuel consumption might be improved due to the fact all the engine options fitted to the new model will receive GM’s upcoming 10 speed automatic gearbox which has been in development for a few years now. For those not happy with the base engine, GM will be offering two different options, a diesel and a larger petrol engine. The diesel will be the same 2.8 liter turbocharged inline 4 unit as before but this time around it might see a boost to around 197 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque, enough to give it a slightly higher top speed and a lower RPM under highway cruising.

On the other hand, the 3.6 liter naturally aspirated V6 petrol unit is very likely going to stay the same, so it will continue to offer 305 horsepower and 269 lb-ft of torque, less than the diesel but thanks to a slightly different rear end, it should be able to tow nearly just as much with the only drawback over the diesel being the worse fuel consumption. Rear wheel drive will be standard and an all wheel drive system will still be an option.

Colorado’s Exterior

For the new model year, the 2017 Chevrolet Colorado is very likely going to be offered in an all new trim level which will certainly make it a favorite among the younger generation. The model that is expected to do this will likely be the ZR2-based off-road trim level which will come with quite a few upgrades over the base truck. This should include a much more capable suspension system with Fox shocks and stiffer springs, 16 inch rims wrapped in high performance off-road tires, steel front and rear bumpers in order to offer the truck better approach and departure angles as well as wider fender flares that will help the truck hide those massive tires.

The dealer-installed options are still going to be offered for the new model year but this time around Chevrolet is expected to add a few new features such as a kit that will relocate the spare tire in the bed, a larger roll-over bar which will include flood-lights, front and rear winches and even an upgraded suspension system for the regular truck. The cabin will likely stay the same as before but instead of the old navigation system the new Colorado should benefit from the latest infotainment system which supports Apple CarPlay and Google’s Android Auto.
