Only a few short years ago many people did not think that electric cars would ever become successful due to their limited range and the range anxiety they provoked to their drivers. However, Tesla proved everyone wrong with their first car, the Roadster, and shortly after that with the Model S which was the first electric car to break the 200 miles of all electric range in a production form. Well, there are now more and more manufacturers trying to breach the market such as Porsche, Volkswagen and more recently, Chevrolet. In order to compete in the entry level car market, which will likely sell in large volumes, GM released a couple of months ago the 2017 Chevrolet Bolt EV, a full electric car with a range of 200 miles which will only cost $37,500.

This is a great price for everyone wanting to take part in the electric revolution because it will actually go down with the help of government grants, basically allowing the car to cost around $30,000 after taxes. At this price point, the Bolt will have to compete with Tesla’s upcoming Model 3 which is going to be its toughest competitor ever due to the way Tesla approached the small electric car. However, until the actual comparison let’s take a look at the Bolt and how good it might be.

Unlike its major competitor, the Model 3, the Bolt will not feature a rapid charging solution which will very likely hurt the car’s sales even though GM is not realizing this for now. Considering that the Model 3 will feature a similar range to the Bolt but a recharge time of less than 30 minutes, GM is having a serious problem here. However, they haven’t said that a fast charging solution will not be implemented in the future but this will likely get some serious work from their part in order to redesign the battery system.

In order to make the car more appealing, the 2017 Chevrolet Bolt EV will be sold with a 240volt and 32Amp charger which will allow the car to add up to 25 miles of range per hour. This means that the massive 60 kWh battery-pack will be recharged from 0 to full in around nine hours, more than 10 times slower than the Model 3. This is also the biggest problem with the Bolt as it will not be able to be used as a true car but more like a city commuting vehicle and that’s about it.

In order to motivate it, GM installed a brand new electric powertrain inside the Bolt, a small electric motor capable of 200 horsepower and 266 lb-ft of torque which is actually driving the front wheels. The chief engineer said that the engine will be enough to get the car to 60 MPH in around seven seconds while the top speed is still unknown. This is still slower than the main competitors but the biggest drawback of the electric motor and battery pack is not the average performance but the fact that the battery pack also takes valuable space inside the trunk. This means that the Bolt offers less trunk space than the Sonic which in its turn offers nearly two times less space than the Model 3.

The good part is that the cabin has been left pretty much untouched so the 2017 Chevrolet Bolt EV is offering flat floors and a ton of space for up to five passengers. The seats are quite thin but the padding is more than enough to offer a comfortable ride. The dashboard is also nicely laid out with the usual Chevrolet design and besides a few buttons for the climate controls, most of the information and car’s functions are accessed via two screens. First one where the instrument cluster usually is and one on the center stack which also acts as the navigation and infotainment system.

In order to sweeten the deal a bit more, instead of going with a sedan, like their competitors, Chevrolet design a mini-MPV which comes with a few added benefits. One of those benefits is a much roomier cabin with a lot more head and legroom, easier boarding and also a more city-friendly shape which will allow the driver to park the car with ease and see all four corners of the car without trouble.
